Southern Connecticut State University (SCSU) seeks a creative and entrepreneurial leader to serve as Director of Career and Professional Development.  SCSU is a student-centered university providing exemplary undergraduate and graduate education to approximately 10,000 students. Founded as New Haven Normal School in 1893, Southern has evolved over the past century into a comprehensive public university committed to excellence, social justice, access, and engagement. SCSU is excited to launch a new department of Career and Professional Development (formerly a part of Academic and Career Advising). The newly-created Director position is a unique opportunity for a high energy, innovative, thoughtful risk taker to create a comprehensive, effective and sustainable career development, experiential learning, and employment services program. Reporting to the Vice President for Student Affairs, the Director will be responsible for identifying and implementing creative and forward-thinking programs and initiatives that address evolving employment and educational trends; advancing the mission and strategic direction of the university; and, positively impacting university outcomes including recruitment, retention and placement.  The Director has primary responsibility for employer development and sustained, longitudinal employer retention to provide career opportunities in public, non-profit and business sectors to undergraduate and graduate students as well as alumni. Immediately upon hire, the new Director will help select a new Associate Director whose primary role will be to provide leadership to deliver a comprehensive career education and preparation program that offers career coaching and advising to assist students at any stage of their career development. 

The successful Director of Career and Professional Development will communicate a vision for the future of career development and services to develop a center that serves as a model for peer institutions.  The new Director will demonstrate capacity to transform the center into a hub of connectivity and engagement grounded in social justice and inclusion; ensure the department is responsive to student career development needs and evolving market trends; cultivate relationships with employers for sustained, longitudinal employer retention; develop strong and effective partnerships with stakeholders across campus; optimize available technology for communication and the effective delivery of services; and, implement effective data collection, analysis, and reporting systems that demonstrate career-related outcomes and inform strategic resource allocation and direction. 


The Director of Career and Professional Development must have a master’s degree in higher education, student affairs, career counseling, human resources, business, or related field and a minimum of six years’ full-time, progressive experience in career development/services within higher education or related area. The successful candidate will be highly motivated, able to navigate complex environments, and possess keen emotional intelligence; demonstrate direct experience working successfully with diverse populations and a clear commitment to social justice; be a strong communicator, able to articulate a vision to diverse constituencies; and, demonstrate a passion for making a difference in the lives of college students.
